In 1966 Jimmy Ruffin scored a big hit, with "What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted" a song that was originally intended for The Spinners, this was one of the first Soul records with the "Swirl" design but my copy is the original design
In 1968 The Four Tops released thier version of "Walk Away Rene" from thier Reach Out Lp it was one of thier last Holland-Dozier_Holla nd produced singles
How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You was released as Tamla 258 in january 1965 there were 4 singles from the Lp "How Sweet It Is" was Marvin's Biggest hit to date "Forever" was the b-side and Marvin's version is sweet as to The Marvelettes version is a serious song of love
in 1969 "These Eyes" was the second release from the "What Does It Take" LP i think its one of Jr walkers better singles, much better than the original version
In 1968 Marvin & Tammi released one of thier most well known songs, "Aint Nothing Like The Real Thing" was released in 1968, it was taken from thier Lp "All I Need"
The Motortown Revue was always a popular stable at Motown in the 60's there were 4 Motortown Revue Lp's released in the 60, here i play a live performance of Heat Wave from The Vandellas from the second Motortown Revue released as Motown 615 in 1964
In 1968 Davis (David) Ruffin was fired from the Temptations he was replaced by Dennis Edwards who was with The Contours, Cloud 9 was Motowns first pop grammy and it took The Temptations mucis in a totally different direction with the help of Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong
In 1970 The Spinners released "Message Fram A Black Man" which should have been a very big hit for them but Motown never promoted the single, this song is all Pervis Jackson with a lil GC Cameron doing lead as well
Temptaions Sing Smokey was the second Lp by the group, only one song from this Lp was recorded while Al Bryant was still a member, all the songs from this Lp were written or co written by Smokey, the Lp was released in 1965
Gladys Knight & The Pips are probly the only act to records one of thier hits for 3 different labels' "Every Beat Of My Heart" was recorded and released on Vee-Jay in 1961 under the Name Pips it was the second label they recorded the song for ( Fury Records) in 1962 that added Gladys' name infront of the groups, and then in 1970 they recorded the song one more time for motown
this is another honorable non motown mention by a motown artist, before she was Tammi Terrell, she was Tammy Montgomery who was discovered by James Brown himself he even penned this killer slow groovin song for her in 1963
Stubborn Kind Of Fellow was Marvin Gaye's first hit record in 1962, being backed by The Vandellas, Martha, Anette, Rosalind and Gloria, climed to #46 on the charts, Gloria left The Vandellas with in a few months after this
"Gotta Hold On To This Feeling" was the first single in 1970 for Jr Walker & The All Stars, the song went to #21 on the charts and the "What Does It Take" lp was renamed "Gotta Hold On To This Feeling"
Syreeta came to Motown in 1967, "I Cant Give Back The Love I Fell For You" was her first single under the name Rita Wright, her first LP "Syreeta" was released in 1971 or 72, Stevie Wonder Presents Syreeta was released in 1974, even tho thier marrage didnt last they remained good friends up untill her passing in 2004 here i play "Spinning & Spinning Around" my favorite song from the LP
The Spinners came to Motown in 1964 when Tri-Phi merged with Motown, in 1969 they pay tribute to thier mentor Harvey Fuqua of The Moonglows, buy covering "In My Diary" a song The Moonglows origonally released in 1955, G.C Cameron sings lead on thier version
The Marvlettes was released in 1967 its often referd to as the "Pink" lp "The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game" was the first single released in December 1966, Wanda sings a perfect lead on this Smokey written song
Gladys Knight & The Pips were already an established act by the time they came to Motown in 1966, with songs like Every Beat Of My Heart, and Letter Full Of Tears, Operator and Give Up, signed to The Soul Label Gladys was the only one who didnt wanna sign with Motown but she was out Voted 3 to 1
The Spinners started off as The El Domingos, Bobbie,Pervis,Henry, Billy and C.P, C.P left to joing The Voicemasters and was replaced by George Dixon, they were discoverd by harvey Fuqua and signed to his Tri-Phi records, and had a top 40 hit with , That's What Girls Are Made For in 1961
The Marvelettes signed to Tamla in 1961, Gladys,Kathrine,Juan ita,Georgeanna and Georgia who was soon replaced by Wanda, hit right off with Please Mr. Postman, the quintette released 3 Lp's (tho Wanda isnt mentioned on Marvelettes Sing' she sings most of the leads on that album) Playdoy thier 3rd Lp was the only one to have all 5 pictured on the cover, Juanita left a few months later.
Barrett Strong had one of motown earliest hits with "Money" in 1959, he also wrote all the hits for the Temptations, he also wrote some of Mary Wells' post motown singles, this song "Money & Me" would have been a hit, if it was Money's follow up
